![]() Aloha All Saints' 'Ohana, We have been watching very carefully Hurricane Lester's potential path. The good news for Kauai and the other islands is that the storm continues to track north-hopefully the Hawaiian Islands have been spared a direct hit. However, forecasts still have Kauai potentially receiving large amounts of rain and significant winds this weekend. The Central Hurricane Center writes, "Although the forecast track currently keeps the strongest winds and heaviest rains offshore, the local weather will be highly dependent on the exact track that Lester takes as it passes by. Only a small error on the left side of the forecast track would bring a significantly higher threat of damaging winds and flooding rains to the islands." Yesterday, we polled the 'Ohana Retreat participants and many expressed reservations about the impact of rain and high winds on the overall retreat experience. Also, some participants had concerns about being isolated in a remote area of the island without communications as the storm passes the island. If it does storm significantly, the retreat group will be confined to a small indoor area all weekend. We want the retreat to be a fun and memorable experience--an indoor retreat at Camp Sloggett is not very appealing. Given the expected stormy conditions and the continued threat of a hurricane, and based on the feedback participants shared, we feel it is in the best interest to POSTPONE this weekend's 'Ohana Retreat. As long as Kauai is not under a "hurricane warning" Sunday morning, All Saints' will then offer two very simple said Eucharist services on Sunday at 7:00AM and 9:30AM. There will be no music and a very brief homily. If you elect to attend Church on Sunday, please stay tuned to local news for weather and local road conditions before traveling into Kapaa on Sunday. Please check Sunday morning the All Saints' website to confirm services will be held. We pray for everyone who might be impacted by the storm. We pray especially for first responders who will be risking their safety for the well being and safety of others. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. Mahalo nui loa. In Christ, ryan+

![]() Earlier this summer, All Saints' launched a bold initiative to develop a ministry internship program. Since June, applicants from all over the United States submitted applications to participate in the year long experience. "I am honored and proud to announce that Sierra Gore has been named the inaugural "Ministry Intern" at All Saints', said Father Ryan. "First and foremost, Sierra is here to learn about ordained and lay ministries, to discern her own vocational call, and to explore the diversity of ministries offered at All Saints. Sierra is also here to serve-to offer her time, talents, and energy to supporting and growing the ministries of All Saints." Sierra will join the All Saints' 'Ohana in late August-just in time to attend the 'Ohana Retreat in Kokee. She will serve for a year and will have the option to extend her internship another year pending Vestry approval. The vision of the Ministry Internship Program is to offer a year of education, service, and discernment to a young adult interested in exploring a vocation in ordained or lay ministry, education, and outreach. "I am excited about the program and the opportunity to support, mentor, and empower future leaders in the Episcopal Church," said Father Ryan. "Sierra's service and leadership will also provide added people resources to the All Saints' Staff as we look to grow our ministries and increase our outreach to the community. Her extensive background working with and ministering to children and youth will be a vital asset to the 'Ohana." In her role, Sierra will serve All Saints' approximately 32-40 hours a week. She will be mentored by Father Ryan and will be given every opportunity to explore the ministries of All Saints' and to make a lasting impact on our 'Ohana and the greater Kauai community. Sierra will have four required "foundational" service responsibilities: (1) Youth Ministry, (2) Elementary Christian Education, (3) Outreach; and, (4) Worship Ministries. In addition, Sierra will work with Fr. Ryan to identify other areas of interest and service. When you meet Sierra, please extend your warmest All Saints' aloha welcome! We give thanks for God calling Sierra to All Saints' and we pray for her continuing growth and discernment. In Her own Words . . .![]() Meet Sierra Gore Hello All Saints'! I'm Sierra Gore and I am extremely excited to be your new Ministry Intern and I cannot wait to meet and get to know you all. Thank you for welcoming me with open arms. Some background on me: I am a 23 year-old Midwest native, I grew up in Belleville, IL with my mom and two younger sisters, Zoë and Katara. After two years at the University of Missouri I decided to leave school and focus on what truly makes me happy. Namely, I started spending more time outside and back in church, or sometimes blending the two together. I' ve now worked for four different Episcopal camps around the country, most recently as Director of Explorers' Camp for Shrine Mont Camps in Virginia. I love being outside hiking or any paddle sports, ice cream, spur of the moment dance parties, and conversations about theology and faith practices. I love seeing God work through people, which is part of the reason I feel called to All Saints'. I'm looking forward to seeing what your ministry looks like already and adding my voice. Like I said, I can't wait to meet you all. I'm very open to getting coffee or ice cream and hearing why you love All Saints' so much. Sincerely, Sierra Gore [download letter]
June 27, 2016 Aloha All Saints’ ‘Ohana, Do you believe that the keiki are the future of the Church? If so, then you understand that we are called by God to support, nurture, and empower their future in the Church! This is a responsibility that needs to be shared by the whole congregation, not just by a few individuals and not just by the parents/guardians of our current keiki. In August, we start the 2016-2017 “program year” and all of us have the opportunity, responsibility, and privilege to support our keiki and their future in the Church. We must renew and strengthen our commitments of time, talent, and resources to support our Sunday School and Youth Ministries at All Saints’. Twenty years ago, the General Convention of the Episcopal Church adopted the “Children’s Charter”. It is an amazing and prophetic document that provides a vision, a standard of excellence, and accountability for churches to support and empower children’s ministries. In the coming years, it is my hope that All Saints’ will live even more fully into the Charter’s vision. Please prayerfully consider the question how much of your time, talents, and resources you are willing to offer for the keiki of our Church. SUNDAY SCHOOL: Starting in August, All Saints’ will implement a dedicated Sunday School curriculum, Weaving God’s Promises. It is a comprehensive, three-year Christian education curriculum for children that is developed and written exclusively for the Episcopal Church.
YOUTH GROUP: The Ke Akua Youth Group typically meets on the 3rd Sunday of the month after the 9:30AM service.
Our keiki are the future of the Church! Offering quality Sunday School and Youth Ministry programs is essential to our Church’s mission and vision. As our Church continues to grow so will our Sunday School and Youth Group . . . As our Sunday School and Youth Group continues to grow, so will our Church. In Mark 9:37, Jesus says, “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.” Our keiki need our time, talents, and resources. Let us welcome our keiki into the Body of Christ. Let us embrace the future of the Church with loving and supportive arms. We need your help! Please consider the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the future leaders of the Church by assisting with the Sunday School and Youth Ministries at All Saints. Ultimately, I ask each of us to continue praying for the keiki of our parish and for the Church’s ministries to young people. Mahalo nui loa. Faithfully in Christ, The Reverend Ryan D. Newman This summer (June and July), All Saints' Sunday School will be taking a summer break. The last day of Sunday School will be this Sunday, May 29.
Why is it important for Sunday School to take a summer recess?
This is a wonderful opportunity to share with our keiki the beauty and reverence of Sunday worship. Invite, embrace, educate, and empower the next generation of the Church to experience the Word and Sacrament of Christ. On Sunday, August 7, 2016 All Saints' will launch a whole new Sunday School experience and we will need your help! Stay tuned for details--a letter to the whole 'Ohana will be sent out next week and reprinted in The Epistle. The nursery will be available to all families, but will not be staffed by volunteers--a parent/guardian will be expected to stay with their child in the nursery. Currently, the nursery provides an audio feed of the service and we hope soon to also have a live video feed of the service available in the nursery. Telling the Story of Laundry Love
This past fall, students from Kapaa Middle School, including All Saints' Raiden Kurisu, created a short documentary film on Laundry Love Kauai. Their feature was selected to air on Hiki Nō. Hiki Nō (which is the Hawaiian phrase for "Can Do") is a PBS Hawaii Learning Initiative that mentors middle and high schoolers from public, charter, and private schools throughout the state of Hawaii as they create PBS-quality video stories about themselves and their communities. Stories that meet PBS standards are compiled into a weekly half-hour program that airs statewide on PBS Hawaii and worldwide on pbshawaii.org. To view the feature on Laundry Love, click on the video link above or here. Also, check out the postscript feature on Hiki Nō which gives a behind-the-scenes look at Raiden and classmates producing their feature. To view the behind-the-scenes piece, click here. |
